Embassy Number Plate Codes
In 1979 a series of Embassy Codes were issued to accompany the personalised style of Diplomatic number plates. These new number plates were for use by foreign embassies, consular staff, and international organisations. The plates consisted of three numbers, followed by a ‘D’ if for Diplomats, or an ‘X’ if for consular or accredited non-diplomatic staff, then another three numbers.
The first set of three numbers identified the Embassy or International Organisation (see chart below), then the letter 'D' or 'X' as described above, followed by the second set of three numbers (the serial number) commencing at 101 for Diplomats, 400 for non-diplomatic staff of international organisations, and 700 upwards for consular or other non-diplomatic staff.
The original issue of the series saw Embassy Codes of 101 to 282 and International Organisation Codes of 900 to 919. These were allocated alphabetically to those represented in the UK at the time. Both series have been extended over time, to include further codes.
In 1984, the issue of the 'X' series became restricted to those having diplomatic immunity from parking and similar traffic offences only. This, unsurprisingly, had a dramatic effect on the amount of ‘X’ plates being used.
Since around 1990 the numbers on Diplomatic Plates, have used a narrower more distinctive font, reducing the chance of any fakes being made.
